New Willoughby Business Looks Better on You

Looks Better on You has a large selection of shoes.

There are a variety of consignment shops in Willoughby, each with its own niche. The newest consignment shop in town is sure to make everything look better on you, whether you are male or female.

Frankie Denmeade, certified personal trainer and marathon runner, opened Looks Better on You at 36495 Vine St. in the Freeway Plaza, in March 2012.

“I enjoy making people fit and making them feel better about themselves,” Denmeade said. “I had thought about it for about six years and decided it was time to open a store.”

Looks Better on You is different from traditional consignment shops, offering far more than just casual clothing. The shop features a variety of styles from business to a large selection of fitness apparel.

The shop accepts new or gently-used clothing, not more than two to three years old.

“We want quality clothing, but it doesn’t have to be brand name,” she said. “We have had a variety of designer bags come through such as Michael Kors and Coach.”

Looks Better on You provides a variety of benefits to customers besides quality clothing. For example, the shop holds a ladies networking night every third Thursday of the month. Attendees at the event have a chance to win a $25 gift card to the shop.

Owner Frankie Denmeade just completed her third Boston Marathon. The shop carries mens and fitness clothing as well.

Denmeade is also dedicated to a variety of charitable causes and plans to work with non-profits such as Dress for Success, a non-profit that aims to dress men and women in professional attire. In addition, she will also encourage customers to run marathons for charity as she does.

“We want the store to be friendly, open and warm,” she said. “We are excited to work non-profits and runs for different causes.”

Looks Better on You is open from noon until 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from noon until 5 p.m.

Willoughby South Graduates Show Hometown Pride with Local T-shirt Business

David Gardner (left) and Derek Stillman (right) are the founders of Derry & Dave Tees.

Two Willoughby South High graduates are using their newly-acquired business knowledge to delve into the local t-shirt business.

David Gardner, 18, and Derek “Derry” Stillman, 19, always enjoyed their hometown of Willoughby but were never able to show off their hometown pride after graduating from South High in 2011.

“We’re both into clothes and fashion,” Stillman said. “We definitely saw a target market in the younger crowd, and we wanted to apply what we are learning in school.”

The two entrepreneurs formed Derry & Dave Tees to gain practical experience with business concepts such as target market, pricing, inventory and others.

Stillman is currently studying business and Chinese at the University of Pittsburgh ,and Gardner attends Lakeland Community College for business and hopes to minor in fashion.

“I like using both the fashion and business aspect,” Gardner said. “It’s a great experience to have your own line when you’re 18.”

The limited edition "Downtown Willobeer" t-shirt costs $15.

Their first shirt which reads “Downtown Willobeer” is a St. Patrick’s Day shirt that not only promotes the bar scene in Downtown Willoughby for the Irish holiday but also pays homage to Stillman’s years of Irish dancing.

Gardner and Stillman also have several designs planned that aren’t alcohol related. Other products on the line include an “I Heart Willoughby” shirt, American Apparel Willoughby shirts and Irish-themed shirts.

“We also want to make shirts that promote Willoughby as the Courtesy City as well,” Stillman said.

The duo will set up a booth at summer events such as the DTW Red, White and BBQ Rib Burn Off on Saturday, May 19 and possibly at the Willoughby Outdoor Market between May and October.

Interested parties can purchase shirts from Derry & Dave Tees by e-mailing derrydavetees@gmail.com or visiting their Facebook.

Update: T-shirts are now available at Twice Loved, 4069 Erie St.

Currently, the business accepts cash only, and shirts will be personally delivered once an order is received. Merchandise can be shipped upon request for an additional cost.

Getting to the Root: Fall Hairstyles Inspired by Old Hollywood

With fall at our feet and the busy holiday season just around the corner, keeping up with hot new hair trends is a must!

This season, trends in hairstyles are inspired by the glamorous, sophisticated look of Old Hollywood.

Before hair will be stuffed snuggly under winter hats, take the time now to show off a new look, or an old favorite.

If you’re attending an upcoming holiday party, or special event, opt for an elegant updo with shiny sultry waves and curls.

For a simple, yet whimsical look, pin hair into a messy side bun, leaving wisps of hair out to frame the face.

For a classic sleek look, pull hair back into an intricate bun.

Have so much hair that you don’t know what to do with it? Try a side braid, or a knot braid. You can pull your braid apart, or tease it, for a tousled, relaxed look.

Your hair isn’t long enough to do anything with? Keep it sleek, or piece it out with a great product and accessorize with a glitzy headband, or clip.

In keeping with the retro glamour look, don’t forget the red matte lipstick!
