John Tillotson to Showcase Artwork at Michael Stefan Salon

Michael Stefan Salon will be hosting an art opening on Saturday, April 21, 2012 featuring the work of John Tillotson.

Join Michael Stefan Salon for spirits and hors d’oeuvres 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and view fine art photography by John Tillotson.

Here is what the artist has to say about his work and experience:

I have been passionate about black and white photography as a fine art since the early 1970′s when I discovered the beautiful work of the legendary landscape photographer Ansel Adams. His work and life has been a tremendous source of inspiration and has had a profound influence on my own photographic work.

My journey in photography began in 1973 with a simple 35mm camera and a roll of Kodak black and white film. As my skills and artistic vision grew, I graduated to the 4×5 view camera. This camera requires a “dark cloth” over your head in order to compose and “focus” the image on a ground glass located at the back of the camera. It produces a film negative 4″x5″ in size and is able to capture very subtle details in an image with incredible sharpness and clarity. This larger film negative gives the photographer the ability to create very large prints with no loss of detail or sharpness.

In 1980, I went on to study graphic design and photography at Bowling Green State University. Many of my photographic compositions have been inspired by the designers and artists I discovered in college. I love photographing in scrap metal and junk yards, along with abandoned structures, barns and burned out buildings. The graphic nature of a rusted metal door or a charred piece of wood lends itself to a striking and beautiful black and white image. I tend to work close up to a subject in order to capture and isolate interesting details, shapes, forms, and textures. In recent years I’ve discovered the photographic beauty that lies within ice formations in frozen rivers and lakes. I’ve always been drawn to the interesting world of plants, trees and the natural landscape as subject matter for my photographs.

The group of images on display at Michael Stefan’s Salon reflect my love and passion for black and white photography.

Willoughby South Hosts Eastlake North in Chardon Charity Basketball Event

Willoughby South and Eastlake North have come together to support Chardon High School in the wake of recent events. A charity basketball game will be hosted on Friday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m at the South High gym, 5000 Shankland Blvd. in Willoughby.

Willoughby South head football coach Matt Duffy and Eastlake North’s head football coach George Burich came up with the concept.

Checks and all money collected will go to Chardon Local Schools to be used for a memorial at the school to be developed by school personnel and the students. Steven Nedlik, Willoughby South High School athletic director, is hoping for an expected attendance of 2,500.

A note from Steven Nedlik, athletic director, Willoughby South High School:

The tragedy at Chardon High School touched the Willoughby-Eastlake school community in a profound way. The benefit basketball game scheduled for Friday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. is a great platform for our students and the WE school community to show are support for our friends at Chardon High School.

Please consider attending this event. T-shirts will be on sale at both North and South High schools all next week March 5 – 8 and the night of the event for $ 10.00. All funds, tickets, t-shirts and concessions will be forwarded to Chardon High School for use in the development and installation of a future memorial to be placed at Chardon High School.

The students and community are very excited about the event. Since the benefit game’s announcement, the feedback has been tremendous. I have received emails and phone calls from around the country, and the outpouring of support and willingness to help has been remarkable.
