On Thursday, June 28, 2012 the Lake County General Health District and Lake Health are sponsoring a free Obesity Forum to act as a countywide call to action in order to combat the obesity epidemic and gain support to improve the public health system in Lake County.
The event will feature information on the national and local obesity epidemic and its impact, as well as a brief excerpt from the HBO documentary The Weight of the Nation. The event seeks to start a dialogue among the community, businesses, agencies, parents, and families in order to address the disease. “Controlling obesity is arguably the most impactful initiative the community can take to positively influence overall health,” commented Gary Robinson, Vice President of Community Affairs for Lake Health.
An expert panel of leaders will be interviewed and available to answer questions from the audience. The event will provide an understanding of how public and private partnerships support Lake County needs.
According to the latest research, because of the obesity epidemic, the current generation of children will be first generation to not live longer than their parents. This epidemic will have long-lasting negative impacts on the economy, workforce, and health care costs.
Deputy Health Commissioner Ron Graham stated, “We have benefited from high levels of education and median income in Lake County resulting in a healthy community; however, obesity will begin to erode our success as our future workforce will be less healthy and ultimately cost more to our healthcare system.” Graham added that replicating evidence based programs are not enough and that there is a need to identify leaders and partners that bring unique talents to the table for successful results.
A tentative panel of speakers includes participants from the Lake County General Health District, Lake Health, Lake County YMCA, local businesses, Lake County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board, and more.
Healthy snacks will be available. Individuals interested in attending this FREE EVENT may RSVP to Karen Sarosy at 440-350-2451 or ksarosy@lcghd.org. Individuals, businesses, and agencies interested in sponsoring the event may contact Deputy Health Commissioner Ron Graham at 440-350-2358 or rgraham@lcghd.org.
